Beat The Heat! Town Opens Cooling Centers, Extends Pool
Hours During Heat Wave
Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray in deference to the second great
heat wave of the summer, announced today a two-pronged approach to
help residents "beat the heat." The Town will open cooling centers at
fourteen (14) senior centers and extend the hours of operation at many
pools across the Town.
"Temperatures are soaring into the 90's and many people don't have air
conditioning," said Murray. "This type of heat can pose serious health
risks especially for seniors and very young children. We need to work
to protect the health and comfort of local residents."
The cooling centers will be open Thursday and Friday, July 17 and 18,
between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m. The facilities are
air-conditioned and there are even activities that will provide an
opportunity for residents to interact and enjoy each other's company,
all while avoiding the scorching temperatures, "very high" UV indexes,
and the health risks that accompany them. Cooling centers open to the
public include:
Baldwin Senior Center, 1810 N. Grand Ave., Baldwin,
546-7110
Bellmore Senior Center, 2000 Bellmore Ave., Bellmore, 221-9696

"Residents should remember that the heat hits the very young and the
elderly particularly hard," concluded Murray. "And, while we in town
government are taking the steps necessary to keep our residents safe
and healthy, they, too, should do their part and check in on elderly
neighbors who are at high risk for dehydration, heat exhaustion, or
even heat stroke. Together, we can beat the heat."
