Town Recruiting Home Aides For Seniors
Supervisor Kate Murray has announced that Hempstead Town is seeking
companions for its HATS (Home Aides to Seniors) Program, which is
administered by its Department of Senior Enrichment. HATS recruits are
provided with a three-day training seminar and are put in contact with
senior residents who have expressed an interest in having a support
companion.
Home aides, who are independent contractors paid by the client,
assist senior residents with fundamental household tasks such as food
shopping, meal preparation, light dusting and vacuuming, changing
linen and doing laundry. HATS companions may also participate in some
recreational activities with the senior.
"This program is great for our seniors who would like to have
someone at their house with them, assisting them with day-to-day
activities and keeping them company at the same time," Murray said.
"Town residents who are interested in supplementing their income while
providing home care for a senior can benefit from this program."
Interviews will be conducted during the week of September 15
through September 19. Applicants will undergo a thorough screening
process. The Department of Senior Enrichment will provide prospective
HATS companions with professional instruction during a three-day fall
training seminar scheduled for Monday, November 17 through Wednesday,
November 19. The training includes education on nutrition, Alzheimer's
disease, drug and alcohol interaction, low-impact exercises, income
tax resources and senior citizen entitlements.
"The HATS program is another example of the many fine services that
the Town of Hempstead provides to our senior citizens through our
Department of Senior Enrichment," concluded Murray.
Anyone who is interested in becoming a HATS companion can schedule
an appointment for an interview by calling (516) 485-8100. Interviews
and training sessions will be conducted at the Town of Hempstead
Department of Senior Enrichment located at 200 North Franklin Street
in Hempstead.
