Hempstead Town Plans Tax Feeze
Murray Plans Tax Freeze Budget
For Hempstead Town
Recognizing the financial challenges confronting many residents in
a flagging economy, Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray is
responding decisively with a plan to freeze the tax rate for all town
taxes.
"Taxpayers are hurting and they are looking to officials at all levels
to provide real leadership," stated Murray. "I will propose a budget
later this year that freezes the tax rate for all town taxes because
it's the right thing to do."
An economic crisis of global proportions has gripped our region,
nation and countries around the world, leaving many municipalities
struggling to meet the needs of their citizens. Clearly a test of
leadership for government officials lies in how they respond to the
crisis.
"It is essential that we evaluate the needs of our citizens in this
current economic climate and develop new policies and initiatives
geared toward easing the daily struggles of our residents who have
been affected by this downturn," Murray added.
While other governments are floundering and face the prospect of
raising taxes and/or slashing services, Murray has reported that there
will be no reduction in town services. In fact, she is actually
rolling out new programs. One of the programs assists qualifying
senior citizens and certain other residents with emergency home
repairs. The $125,000 program utilizes grant monies to fund repairs to
roofs, heating systems and other housing systems that have failed and
created an emergency. A second initiative, implemented through
"Hempstead Works" employment resource center, is utilizing a $250,000
grant to help displaced workers adjust to changing employment trends.
"Now is not a time for governments to curtail programs, reduce
services or cut hours of operation," said the Supervisor. "It's time
for government officials to 'step up' and provide more assistance in
this time of need."
Hempstead remains a beacon of fiscal accountability and strength due
to conservative budgeting and aggressive cost controls. Wall Street
credit rating agency Standard & Poor's observed in August of 2008 that
the town's ". . . stable (financial) outlook reflects strong
management performance and the expectation that the town will maintain
its strong financial position, despite the economic slowdown."
The fiscal responsibility exhibited by Hempstead Town officials over
the past few years allows the town to meet the needs of residents with
the dual approach of both freezing the tax rate and providing more
support services.
"Our residents need the support and leadership of government officials
now more than ever," concluded Murray. "That's why I am freezing the
tax rate for our residents while expanding the services available to
taxpayers."
