The Department of Sanitation operates as the solid
waste planning unit for the entire Town of Hempstead. The department
is responsible for the disposition of all solid waste generated within
the boundaries of the town. Simply put, the department oversees the
disposal of an estimated 670,000 tons of garbage each year. That which
is not recycled is processed in a state-of-the-art waste-to-energy
facility, creating both an environmental and economic benefit for all
town residents.
The town continually searches for new ways to
dispose of waste in a sound, environmentally safe manner. To that end,
the town operates a comprehensive, curbside recycling program,
removing from the waste stream those items which can be successfully
recycled. In considering the environmental hazards posed by certain
household chemicals, the town implemented a program called S.T.O.P.
(Stop Throwing Out Pollutants). This program takes ordinary household
chemicals such as cleaning sprays, paints, etc. and disposes of them
in a way that safeguards our environment. The town holds 10 "S.T.O.P.
DAYS" a year at various locations around the town. Look for one in
your community. Further, the Town of Hempstead's E-Cycling Program
provides residents with opportunities to recycle unwanted computer and
electronic equipment, keeping harmful toxins out of the waste stream.
While the town is responsible for the disposal of
all solid waste, the collection of this waste is divided among various
government jurisdictions. The Department of Sanitation collects waste
and recyclables within the following communities: Barnum Isle, Bay
Park, Bellmore, Bethpage, East Meadow, Harbor Isle, Levittown, Lido
Beach, Merrick, North Lynbrook, Point Lookout, Salisbury, South
Westbury, Seaford, Uniondale and Wantagh. Other areas are serviced by
Sanitation Collection Districts or local village governments.
Information regarding collection in these district or village areas
has been provided on the "Sanitation Districts" page. Residents should
contact those district or village offices directly to obtain
information regarding collection or recycling schedules and practices.
